New Regulation of Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) for M1 and N1 vehicles

The Working Party on Automated/Autonomous and Connected Vehicles (GRVA) developed a proposal for a new Regulation concerning the approval of motor vehicles with regard to the Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) for M1 and N1 vehicles. Now, the WP.29 has adopted it in its 178th session which was held from 25 to 28 June 2019. This new Regulation will enter into force in the first weeks of 2020.
The intention of the future Regulation is to establish uniform provisions on AEBS fitted to M1 and N1 vehicles and primarily used within urban driving conditions.
The system shall automatically detect a potential forward collision, provide the driver with an appropriate warning and activate the vehicle braking system to decelerate the vehicle with the purpose of avoiding or mitigating the severity of a collision in the event that the driver does not respond to the warning.
For the redaction of the proposal, many different situations have been taken into account.
It is remarked that, in the case of a failure in the system, the safe operation of the vehicle shall not be endangered.
Furthermore, during any action taken by the system, the driver can, at any time through a conscious action, take control and override the system.
Nevertheless, not for all conditions, such as traffic scenarios, infrastructure features or weather conditions, the performance required for AEBS systems can be achieved.
Actual conditions in the real world should not result in false warnings or false braking to the extent that they encourage the driver to switch the system off.
