Proposal for a New Regulation on Batteries

The European Commission has published a proposal for a New Regulation on Batteries aiming to modernize the EU rules. EU law aims to minimize batteries’ harmful effects on the environment.

The rules cover their full life cycle, from design & production to reuse & recycling.

In line with the Green Deal and other sustainability-related policies, this initiative would update EU rules to ensure:

  • All batteries are produced sustainably (i.e. with low resource consumption and little waste generated) and can be easily recycled;
  • Any batteries used in the growing market for electric vehicles are sustainable.

The proposal was in feedback period from 28 May 2020 to 9 July 2020.

On October 2020 has been published a briefing on Batteries Directive.

This briefing examines the implementation of the Batteries Directive in light of the upcoming European Commission proposal to modify the directive or prepare a proposal for a completely new regulation, to repeal the directive.

The Commission proposal, to be accompanied by an impact assessment, is expected in the fourth quarter of 2020.
