EU – R(EU) .../... - Driver drowsiness and attention warning - Proposal for a New Regulation

      Categories: M and N

The European Commission published a new draft on Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) .../... of XXXX supplementing and amending Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 of the European Parliament and of the Council by laying down detailed rules concerning the specific test procedures and technical requirements for the type-approval of motor vehicles with regard to driver drowsiness and attention warning.

The driver drowsiness and attention warning (DDAW) is a system assessing the driver’s alertness through vehicle systems’ analysis and, where needed, providing warning to the driver. That system must detect or recognize the driving and/or steering pattern symptomatic of a driver exhibiting reduced alertness due to drowsiness and interact with and alert the driver via the vehicle’s human-machine interface.

This Regulation provides guidelines to technical services and type-approval authorities about the reference scale to be used to measure driver drowsiness and the reference test procedure to be carried out with human participants. Where the vehicle manufacturers chose to use a different approach, it should be duly documented and equivalence to the reference scale shall be provided. In that case, discrepancies in the reference test procedure may be allowed but can be penalized.

This Regulation shall enter into force on the twentieth day following that its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
